Our Story

Why I Founded Black Gold Shito
Black Gold Shito was born from my passion as a proud Ghanaian to share one of Ghana's greatest culinary treasures with the world.
Growing up, shito was more than just a condiment—it was an essential part of everyday life. It brought families together around the dining table and transformed simple meals into rich and memorable dining experiences. Whether enjoyed with rice, yam, plantain, banku, kenkey, waakye or grilled fish, shito has always represented the warmth, hospitality and vibrant food culture of Ghana.
As I travelled and met people from different countries and cultures, I realised that many had never experienced authentic Ghanaian cuisine or even heard of shito. At the same time, I saw people embracing foods from every corner of the world. Today's world has become a global village where people are eager to discover new cultures through food, travel and shared experiences.
That inspired me to ask a simple question:
Why should such an incredible Ghanaian sauce remain known mainly within the Ghanaian community when it has the potential to be enjoyed by everyone?
This vision became the foundation of Black Gold Shito.
My mission is to introduce authentic Ghanaian shito to people of every nationality, culture and background while preserving the traditional methods and rich flavours that make it so special. I want people from every part of the world to experience the unique taste of Ghana, one jar at a time.
I also recognise that everyone has different tastes and preferences. Some people enjoy intense chilli heat, while others prefer a much milder flavour. For this reason, Black Gold Shito is being developed in carefully balanced heat levels, allowing every customer to enjoy the rich flavour of shito at a level that suits their palate.
Our planned heat range includes:
- Mild 🌶️ – Rich flavour with very gentle heat.
- Medium 🌶️🌶️ – Balanced warmth with authentic character.
- Hot 🌶️🌶️🌶️ – Traditional Ghanaian-style heat.
- Extra Hot 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ – For those who enjoy bold, fiery flavours.
Inclusivity is equally important to me.
To ensure that more people can experience Ghanaian cuisine, I developed Black Gold Vegetarian Mushroom Shito, a completely new concept inspired by traditional shito but created specifically for vegetarians, vegans and anyone looking for a delicious plant-based alternative. Rather than simply removing fish from the recipe, I carefully developed a mushroom-based version that delivers depth, richness and satisfying umami while respecting the essence of shito. We continue to explore how we can expand vegetarian shito using varieties of vegetables.
I also introduced Black Gold Curry Fish & Shrimp Shito, another innovative variation that combines authentic Ghanaian shito with premium curry spices. This unique product creates a bridge between West African and Asian-inspired flavours, inviting even more people to discover and enjoy Ghanaian cuisine through a familiar yet distinctive taste experience.
These innovations are not intended to replace traditional Ghanaian shito. On the contrary, they celebrate it by introducing new audiences to its rich heritage while respecting the authenticity of the original recipe.
At Black Gold Shito, we believe food has the power to bring people together regardless of nationality, race or culture. Every jar represents more than a sauce—it tells a story of heritage, craftsmanship, innovation and hospitality.
As a Ghanaian, I am incredibly proud of my country's culinary traditions. Through Black Gold Shito, my hope is to share a small but meaningful part of Ghana with the world, allowing people everywhere to experience the richness of our flavours, the warmth of our culture and the joy that great food brings to every table.

Black Gold Shito is more than a condiment. It is Ghana's heritage, thoughtfully crafted and proudly shared with the world.
